The airport was built by the United States Army Air Forces in 1943, and was known as Aurora Flight Strip. It was an outlying (supporting) airfield to Portland Army Air Base for military aircraft on training flights.  It was closed after World War II, and was turned over for state government use by the War Assets Administration (WAA).

Aurora State Airport, located in Aurora, Oregon, it was originally built as a military training base, it served as a training facility for both the U.S. Army and Navy. After the war, it was turned over to the Oregon Department of Aeronautics and became a public airport in 1949.

Today, Aurora State Airport is a general aviation airport that provides a range of facilities and services to the aviation community. The airport covers an area of 980 acres and has a single runway that is 5,001 feet long and 100 feet wide. It is capable of handling a variety of aircraft, including business jets, helicopters, and single-engine piston planes.
