KYKM – Yakima Air Terminal/Mcallister Field

The McAllister Airfield first officially operated in 1926 (Goodman’s pasture had been in use unofficially before 1928) in an 80 acre field cleared from sagebrush with a single runway added.  In 1932, the airport was improved by adding a 2,600-foot long gravel landing strip with a drainage system. Shortly after this, the area was graded and surfaced for Runway 9/27 (3,750 feet) and Runway 4/22 (3,000 feet). In 1940, the old runways were converted into taxiways, and a new 5,000-foot runway (the new Runway 9/27) and a new 4,000-foot runway (the new Runway 4/22) were completed. During World War II the airfield was used by the United States Army Air Forces.

In 1949, a new passenger terminal was constructed, which also housed the FAA control tower and the local National Weather Service office. The airport installed its first Instrument Landing System on Runway 9/27 in 1953. In 1974, the FAA built a new control tower which is still operational today.

Over the years, numerous airlines served Yakima from multiple cities, but today, the airport is only served by Alaska Airlines with daily flights to Seattle.
