KPVC – Provincetown Municipal Airport

The airport was constructed in 1947, under the Federal Airport Act, and its runway was paved in 1948. The original transitions to the taxiways were curved, or jug-handle-shaped to support tail-draggers like the DC-3 that operated at the airport in for the next 10 years.

In 1949, Provincetown-Boston Airlines (PBA), owned by John Van Arsdale Sr., started scheduled air service between Provincetown and Boston using Cessna Bobcats. For the next 30 years, PBA acquired surplus DC-3s, Martin 404s, and expanded its fleet with Cessna 402s, Embraer 110s and 120s, and YS-11s. Through a series of mergers, PBA was eventually acquired by People Express and which later merged with Continental Airlines and in 1988, Continental cancelled the Provincetown – Boston route.  Cape Air began operations that same year and continues to serve Provincetown today.
