Beginning in 1943, pilots of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Navy\">Royal Navy<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fleet_Air_Arm\">Fleet Air Arm<\/a>\u00a0were trained at Quonset Point to fly the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vought_F4U_Corsair\">Vought F4U Corsair<\/a>, which was then brought into service on British aircraft carriers.  Squadrons such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VS-33\">VS-33<\/a>\u00a0flew\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anti-submarine_warfare\">anti-submarine<\/a>\u00a0patrols from NAS Quonset Point.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quonset_Point_Air_National_Guard_Station#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NAS Quonset Point continued as a major naval facility well into the Cold War.  Prior to its closure, it had been home to numerous aviation squadrons, primarily those land-based patrol squadrons operating the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P-2_Neptune\">P-2 Neptune<\/a>\u00a0and carrier-based antisubmarine and airborne early warning squadrons operating the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S-2_Tracker\">S-2 Tracker<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E-1_Tracer\">E-1 Tracer<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sikorsky_SH-3_Sea_King\">SH3D Sea King<\/a>\u00a0helicopters and various modified versions of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A-1_Skyraider\">A-1 Skyraider<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NAS Quonset Point was also the off-season home of Antarctic Development Squadron Six (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VX-6\">VX-6<\/a>, later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VXE-6\">VXE-6<\/a>) during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, operating the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C-47_Skytrain\">LC-47 Skytrain<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P-2_Neptune\">LP-2J Neptune<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C-54_Skymaster\">C-54 Skymaster<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C-121_Constellation\">C-121 Constellation<\/a>, and eventually the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C-130_Hercules\">LC-130F and LC-130R Hercules<\/a>, as well as a variety of helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1950, Coast Guard Air Detachment Quonset Point was established as a sub unit of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coast_Guard_Air_Station_Salem\">CGAS Salem<\/a>, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to flying squadrons, the air station was also home to a major aircraft overhaul and repair (O &amp; R) facility, later renamed&nbsp;<strong>Naval Air Rework Facility<\/strong>&nbsp;(<strong>NARF<\/strong>)&nbsp;<strong>Quonset Point<\/strong>. O &amp; R Facilities, and their later incarnation as NARFs, are the predecessor of the present day Fleet Readiness Centers (FRCs), previously known as Naval Aviation Depots (NADEPs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boasting a deepwater port, NAS Quonset Point was also homeport to several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Essex_class_aircraft_carrier\">Essex class aircraft carriers<\/a>, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Essex_(CV-9)\">USS\u00a0<em>Essex<\/em>\u00a0(CV-9)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Intrepid_(CV-11)\">USS\u00a0<em>Intrepid<\/em>\u00a0(CV-11)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Wasp_(CV-18)\">USS\u00a0<em>Wasp<\/em>\u00a0(CV-18)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Leyte_(CV-32)\">USS\u00a0<em>Leyte\u00a0<\/em>(CV-32)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Antietam_(CV-36)\">USS\u00a0<em>Antietam<\/em>\u00a0(CV-36)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Lake_Champlain_(CV-39)\">USS\u00a0<em>Lake Champlain<\/em>\u00a0(CV-39)<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Tarawa_(CV-40)\">USS\u00a0<em>Tarawa<\/em>\u00a0(CV-40)<\/a>, as well as their respective carrier air groups (CAGs or CVSGs).  In September 1945, Air Wing Eighteen became\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carrier_Air_Wing_Seven\">Air Wing Seven<\/a>\u00a0here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NAS Quonset Point was decommissioned on 28 June 1974\u00a0as part of a series of defense cutbacks which resulted in a nationwide reduction in bases following the end of the US engagement in Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quonset Point Air National Guard Station<\/strong>\u00a0is the home base of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhode_Island_Air_National_Guard\">Rhode Island Air National Guard<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/143rd_Airlift_Wing\">143rd Airlift Wing<\/a>. \u00a0<strong>Naval Air Station<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>NAS<\/strong>)\u00a0<strong>Quonset Point<\/strong>\u00a0was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Navy\">United States Naval Base<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quonset_Point\">Quonset Point<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhode_Island\">Rhode Island<\/a>\u00a0that was deactivated in 1974.   Next to NAS Quonset Point was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camp_Endicott\">Camp Endicott<\/a>\u00a0at Davisville, home of the Naval Construction Battalions known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seabee_(US_Navy)\">Seabees<\/a>.
