Land in the Amboy section of the nearby town of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camillus,_New_York\">Camillus<\/a>\u00a0was purchased for $50,000, and by 1928, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syracuse_Municipal_Airport\">&#8220;Syracuse City Airport at Amboy&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0was handling airmail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the start of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>, the airport was pressed into service as a flight training center for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army_Air_Forces\">Army Air Forces<\/a>.  By 1942, it had become apparent that Amboy Airport was not large enough to handle military needs, and as a replacement, the AAF opened Syracuse Army Air Base in the suburb of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mattydale,_New_York\">Mattydale, New York<\/a>.  At the end of World War II, the AAF leased the base to the city. On September 17, 1949, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clarence_E._Hancock\">Clarence E. Hancock<\/a>\u00a0Airport (named for the area&#8217;s Congressman) opened to the public using a renovated machine shop as a terminal and replaced the airport at Amboy. \u00a0The airport had three concrete runways, 5,500 feet (1,700\u00a0m) long and 300 feet (91\u00a0m) wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syracuse_Hancock_International_Airport\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syracuse_Hancock_International_Airport<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">https:\/\/www.syrairport.org<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1927, Syracuse mayor\u00a0Charles Hanna\u00a0felt his city needed an airport.
