Built and named Portsmouth Municipal Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-6evvg\"><strong>1941 <\/strong>&#8211; Improvements to the airport were announced as a result of the onset of World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-27ivk\"><strong>1942 <\/strong>&#8211; Closed to civilian traffic under defense measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-5f9fl\"><strong>1944 <\/strong>&#8211; Released to the US Navy who had a presence at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-a0ved\"><strong>1951 <\/strong>&#8211; US Air Force assumed control and was selected as a Strategic Air Command (SAC) Base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-5m39l\"><strong>1952 &#8211; 1956<\/strong> &#8211; purchased additional land and expanded the base; renamed Portsmouth Air Force Base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-6atcn\"><strong>1957 <\/strong>&#8211; Renamed Pease Air Force Base in honor of NH native <a href=\"https:\/\/www.157arw.ang.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/446598\/harl-pease-jr\/\"><u>Captain Harl Pease, Jr., USAAC<\/u><\/a>, awarded Medal of Honor for heroism during WWII.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-bho2g\"><strong>1961 &#8211; 1962<\/strong> &#8211; During this time, the base received consideration as a potential site for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LGM-30_Minuteman\"><u>Minuteman missile deployments<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-2ja3k\"><strong>1966 <\/strong>&#8211; The New Hampshire National Guard, previously located in Manchester, relocated to Pease Air Force Base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-5lce\"><strong>1988 <\/strong>&#8211; Pease Air Force Base was one of the 86 military installations to be closed as part of the Secretary of Defense\u2019s Base Realignment and Closure process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-5n0je\"><strong>1989 <\/strong>&#8211; Over 3,000 active-duty military personnel were employed at Pease Air Force Base, 49 of which were assigned to the Air National Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-65nbh\"><strong>1991 <\/strong>&#8211; Pease Air Force Base officially closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-2j3bt\">The majority of Pease Air Force Base was transferred to the <a href=\"https:\/\/peasedev.org\/about\/\"><u>Pease Development Authority<\/u><\/a> which operates Pease International Tradeport including Portsmouth International Airport at Pease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-csqlf\">&#8211; The remaining part of the former Pease Air Force Base was transferred to the New Hampshire Air National Guard, and later renamed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.157arw.ang.af.mil\/\"><u>Pease Air National Guard Base<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-8pq2m\">&#8211;
